ADB approves loan to Improve Power Distribution in Meghalaya

Current Context: The Asian Development Bank ( ADB) has approved the loan to strengthen and improve the power distribution network in Meghalaya.

  • ADB approves the loan in Meghalaya for the development of power distribution 
  • A loan amounting to USD 132.8 million has been sanctioned by the ADB. 
  • This loan sum will be used to develop and upgrade the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL).
  • MePDCL also has an outstanding purchase of electricity from central power generating stations and the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL). So, to wipe out these unpaid dues, this loan amount will be used. 
  • Under this project, 23 substations will be constructed along with renovation and modernization of 45 substations in the state.
  • Installation and up-gradation of 2214 km of distribution lines and developing provision of control room equipment and protection systems will be carried out under this project.
